About the Artist

Creative Accents Art Glass was founded by Joan Garrett Wilson in 1994 after completing an apprenticeship with Classic Lights Art Glass Studio. Joan has always loved being creative from an early age. She grew up drawing, painting, and trying many different crafts before she found her muse in stained glass. Her love for this new skill with art glass inspired her to offer her services and she began creating art glass items for clients. In 1999, Joan was commissioned by the Junior League of Athens to create nine original stained glass presentations honoring distinguished Georgians, including Governor Zell Miller. She continued in her efforts including larger projects for clients. Her work continues to reflect a commitment to exceptional craftsmanship and original design.

Cleaning Your Stained Glass

Handcrafted stained glass is designed to provide beauty for generations with only minimal care. Your new stained glass piece from me will come freshly cleaned, waxed and polished. To maintain, simply wipe with a microfiber or soft cotton cloth. Do not use any chemical or acid-based cleaners on it.

In the future, if needed, wet a soft cloth with water and a mild dish soap, such as Dawn, to wash it. Make sure to gently dry it off immediately after washing. You can use carnauba car wax to restore shine and add protection to slow oxidization. It is natural for oxidization to occur over time on the lead and solder lines. If this should happen, use a wet q-tip to wipe it away. Avoid contact with anything abrasive, as it will scuff and damage the piece, especially pieces that have a black or copper patina finish and items made with iridescent glass gems. Following these simple guidelines will help preserve the brilliance and integrity of your artwork. Avoid abrasive cleaners, ammonia-based products, scouring pads, or harsh chemicals, as these may damage the lead came, solder joints, decorative finishes, or protective patinas. Stained glass artwork contains lead. Lead is a toxic material. To minimize the risk of exposure and lead dust, handle with care, do not allow children to handle or put in their mouths, and always wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water after handling.

Displaying Your Artwork

Your stained glass item is fragile and should be handled with care. It is best displayed in an area with minimal contact or where it can’t be easily bumped into. Always use a screw in hook or a nail to hang your piece. Use sturdy hooks, chains, or display hardware designed to support the weight of the panel and the use of suction cups for windows is not recommended. The adhesive hooks are a better option if necessary. Larger pieces should always be supported from reinforced hanging points rather than the decorative lead itself.Suction cups are never recommended as they can fail, leaving you with a damaged piece. Stained glass is most beautiful when illuminated by natural light. Hanging panels in front of a window allows sunlight to enhance the colors and textures throughout the day.

Indoor Use

Most decorative stained glass artwork is intended for indoor display. If a piece is installed outdoors or in an exposed location, it should be properly protected from excessive moisture, wind, and temperature extremes.

Long-Term Care

Over many decades, stained glass may benefit from professional inspection or restoration, particularly antique or heirloom pieces. Proper care will allow handcrafted stained glass to remain a treasured work of art for generations.
